Sunflowers symbolize gratitude, love, and long-term friendship. The real significance of
sunflowers lies in their association with the sun. The sweet smell of sunflowers make them well-
known as “happy” flowers, which makes them a thoughtful gift to brighten someone's
day. Native Americans first domesticated sunflowers about 3,000 to 5,000 years ago, primarily to
provide an abundant supply of seeds for food. They then traveled to Europe, which they first
encountered , and finally arrived in Russia. These flowers were
developed and grown on an industrial scale in Russia, where oilseed cultivators were located.
Starting in the mid-20th century, Russia reintroduced the oilseed cultivation process to North
America; commercial North American sunflower production and breeding began. A new breed of
Helianthus spread in new regions around the world.
In some species, sunflowers can grow to a height of 120 inches (300 cm). They feature wide,
terminal capitula (flower heads), which are yellow or maroon (also known as a brown/red) with
yellow or maroon ray florets at the outside and yellow or maroon disc florets in the center. Red-
colored ray florets are found in various ornamental cultivars of H. annuus, which all stem from a
single original mutant. During growth, sunflowers face the sun throughout the day, but once they
start to bloom, they change position to face the rising sun. Young sunflower plants exhibit a
phenomenon called heliotropism. On average, sunflowers face east by the time they are
mature. When the sunflower follows the sun, growth hormones accumulate on the opposite side
of the stem and cause growth, which turns the stem around and causes it to follow the sun. In
wild plants, the stem is usually branched in the upper part, but in domesticated cultivars, it is
not. They also contain nutrients that can help your immune system and give you more energy. Sunflower seeds may have anti-inflammatory properties for people who have short-term or chronic inflammation. Sunflower seeds contain vitamin E, flavonoids, and other plant compounds that have anti-inflammatory properties.
